The Anasazi left magnificent masonry ruins of their once thriving culture. Centered at Chaco Canyon, remains of their ancient culture radiated outward throughout the Four Corners Area. The San Juan County Administration Building in Aztec draws upon the tradition, utilizing standard manufactured concrete masonry units to offer an economical representation of the iconic architecture. The design utilized the traditional Kiva form as the Public Lobby and Commission Chambers. Upon arrival, the visitor passes through the massive opening to a courtyard which is bisected by the main circulation spine. The intersection creates the Public Lobby and serves double duty as overflow space for Commission meetings. The building creates interesting spaces filled with daylight. The Departmental offices are organized to create an economy of circulation and hierarchy of uses that proceed from most public to least public spaces.
