SAN CARLOS APACHE HEALTHCARE CENTER
Peridot, AZ

This multidisciplinary medical center replaced a deteriorating and substandard rural hospital. The project’s overarching challenge was to advance access to 21st century healthcare in a welcoming and non-threatening environment that respects and preserves the tribe’s cultural identity. The new campus is sited on 50 pristine acres of rolling, rugged landscape within the 1.9 million acre Apache Reservation. Big skies, native landscape, and dramatic views are prominent site features and the nearby “Triplets” mountain range and legendary burial site of Geronimo provide rich cultural lore.

Individual buildings and thoughtful open space provide a humane and approachable experience for patients and their families. Local sandstone, wood, patina metal, and desert colored plaster connect the buildings to the earth, reinforcing the sense that the architecture belongs.

San Carlos Apache Healthcare Center supports integrated and multidisciplinary healthcare delivery based on a physician teamwork model that brings specialty services to patients, but is also a force of change for this previously underserved population -300 new jobs benefit a struggling local economy, high quality physicians are now attracted, and a renewed sense of pride has spread throughout the community.
