UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO CANCER CENTER
Albuquerque, NM

The UNM Cancer Center design transformed cancer treatment, research and education in New Mexico, enabling UNM to achieve national status that hugely advanced funding and physician and research recruiting. More importantly, the Center provided a state-of-the-art treatment option for New Mexicans for whom out-of-state national center care was logistically inconvenient or cost prohibitive.

The five level facility’s signature is a full height “lantern of hope” atrium that provides an uplifting gesture for the patient’s experience. It established a benchmark in the Southwest for “patient first” healthcare design and is particularly responsive to the region’s large Native American constituency. Simple and flexible floor plans organize specialty clinics, treatment modalities, and team areas to optimize efficiency and promote sharing of ideas toward the best patient care strategies. High staff performance and sensitivity to patients is enhanced by an inviting and warm, health spa/hospitality-like environment that encourages wellness and hope in a context that respects New Mexico’s unique multi-cultural patient base. The facility’s network of light and art-filled public space engages the outdoors and connects patients and staff to unique nearby and distant surroundings.
