UNM Gallup Technology Center & Classroom Building
Gallup, NM

The UNM Gallup Technology and Classroom Building program and design effort was challenged by a disparate program that demanded flexibility to accommodate the 85% Native American student body beyond academic needs. The design was challenged to provide a “home away from home” for mostly first-time college students, many of whom commute more than 80 miles a day and spend long days on campus. The facility consolidates student services, faculty offices, classrooms, and a showcase lecture hall, as well as a variety of indoor and outdoor studying and “hang out” places. Challenged by a steep site and harsh winter winds, the design responds to environmental challenges with a south-oriented, “c” shaped, two-level plan configuring student services and technology spaces around a double-height gathering space. The building’s shape defines its inviting entrance and an amphitheater-like terrace; winter winds are shielded and a welcome campus microclimate is provided. Robust interlocking geometry composed of cast in place concrete, natural copper, and glass walls complement and update the 1970’s pseudo pueblo-style context, establishing a bold gateway and dynamic image for UNM’s largest branch campus.
