SAN JUAN COUNTY SHERIFF HEADQUARTERS
Aztec, NM

The administrative Sheriff’s Facility was developed in response to a thorough needs assessment and San Juan County design criteria compiled in the Program and Conceptual Master Plan developed by RMKM. The law enforcement systems, operations and culture are based upon similar CPED principles and is highly relevant to this Justice Complex. The facility aesthetic melds the contemporary systems, materials and true forms of “modern” era architecture with powerful iconic Anasazi elements of the region. The facility’s fully accessible 2-story internal “race-track” circulation system efficiently engages the site security strategies, the specialized functional points of exterior access to the building and corresponds with the diverse Law Enforcement operations of the six distinct functional zones. “Function strongly influences the building form, and more importantly, the distinction between the architectural forms and the functions dissolve.”
